Mount Kailash is the holiest mountain of the Himalayas and perhaps even of the whole world. Worshipped by Buddhists, Hindus and followers of Jainism and Bön religions alike, it is considered their holiest pilgrimage site.

„As the dew is dried up by the morning Sun,
So are the sins of mankind by the sight of it“

Due to its religious significance, the 6,714 m holy mountain located in the Gangdisê Shanits range -the western part of the Tibetan Himalayas- has never been climbed. Although in 1985 Reinhold Messner was issued the first-ever permit to ascend it, he renounced the opportunity.

Bruno Baumann has been following the footsteps of Kailash pilgrims and has managed to comprehend the natural mandala in its entirety. He is the only westerner to have reached the sources of the four great rivers, accompanying the course of the Indus, Brahmaputra, Sutlej und Karnali for thousands of kilometres partly on foot.
