NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC “Dolomites – The Stone Heart of the World” exhibition at the Cusanus Academy Brixen – with photographs by Georg Tappeiner
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC DEUTSCHLAND is showing the photo exhibition “Dolomites – The Stone Heart of the World” at the Cusanus Academy Brixen in cooperation with the International Mountain Summit (IMS). Fifty images take the trade fair visitor on a journey through deep valleys and gentle hills. Spectacular mountain massifs alternative with green alpine pastures and blue lakes, all bearing witness to the World Cultural Heritage Site of the Dolomites – an area unique in terms of both landscape and history. Equipped with a Hasselblad camera, the photographer Georg Tappeiner – originally from Meran in South Tyrol – has explored this sensational landscape and recorded it in images of archaic power. The photo exhibition was developed in collaboration with the regions South Tyrol, Trentino and Veneto and can be viewed from 30.07.2011 to 17.08.2011.
Every year the UNESCO World Heritage Committee decides on the inclusion of new world heritage sites in the UNESCO list. This involves giving protected status to natural sites or areas of outstanding universal value from the point of view of science, conservation or natural beauty. The Dolomites were selected in June 2009 by reason of their “unique monumental beauty”, for they are truly incomparable as a mountain landscape. They also have very special geological origins: 230 million years ago the Dolomites formed a huge coral reef in the primordial Tethys Sea. So hiking along the seafloor, circling coral reefs on a bicycle or climbing through the Earth’s history are everyday activities here. The Dolomites rise up from the earth like stone fountains, and at the same time are surrounded by green pastures and dark woods.
The pictures created by the NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC photographer Georg Tappeiner reveal the beauty of the Dolomites and simultaneously show the need to conserve them, fully in line with the contemporary mission of the National Geographic Society: “Inspiring people to care about the planet” and the ambition of IMS to offer a platform to the alpine world. The International Mountain Summit will take place from 21. - 30.10.2011 in Brixen, South Tyrol.
